What Is a Cake Smash Session? (And Why You Need One for Your Baby's First Birthday)

Your baby's first birthday only happens once. And while the party planning, the decorations, and the guest list all take up a lot of your headspace, there's one thing, more and more parents are adding to their celebration — a cake smash session.

If you've seen those adorable photos of frosting-covered babies grinning from ear to ear and wondered "how do I get that?" — this post is for you.

So, What Exactly Is a Cake Smash Session?

A cake smash session is a milestone photography session specifically designed for babies turning one. Your little one gets their very own cake to dig into, destroy, and wear — all while I capture every messy, magical moment.

It's not just about the cake, though. A full session typically includes three parts:

Milestone Shots

Before the sugar rush begins, we do a short segment of your baby sitting, standing, and playing on the styled set. This helps them warm up to the space and lets me capture some beautiful, calm portraits before things get deliciously chaotic.

The Cake Smash

This is the main event. Your baby is placed in front of their cake and encouraged to dig in. Some babies dive right in. Others poke it cautiously. Some just stare at it. All of it is perfect, and all of it makes for incredible photos.

The Splash

After the smash, we finish with a fun bath segment where your baby splashes around in a white bathtub on set. It's a sweet way to wrap up the session (and clean off some of that frosting).

What Makes a Cake Smash Session Special?

Milestone photography is about more than just pretty pictures — it's about freezing a moment in time that you genuinely cannot get back. Your baby will never be one again. These images become something you'll look back on for decades.

Cake smash sessions are also just really, really fun. For your baby, it's a sensory adventure. For you, it's a chance to watch them experience pure joy. And for everyone who sees the photos, it's instant happiness.
