10 Tips for a Successful Cake Smash Session

You've booked the session, picked a theme, and marked the date on your calendar. Now comes the part that no one fully prepares you for: the session itself. Cake smash sessions are joyful and a little unpredictable which is exactly what makes them so magical. But a little preparation goes a long way.

Here are 10 tips to help everything go smoothly (and get you the photos you're dreaming of).

1. Arrive On Time and Ready to Go

The session runs 30 minutes to an hour, and that time goes fast. Arriving even 10–15 minutes late can mean feeling rushed through the smash itself. Give yourself extra buffer for parking, carrying in your diaper bag, and getting your baby settled before things start.

2. Don't Dress Your Baby in the Session Outfit for the Drive

Spit-up, car seat straps, a snack on the way — anything can happen between your front door and the studio. Pack the session outfit separately and change your baby when you arrive. Future you will be grateful.

3. Time the Session Around Nap and Feed Schedules

A tired or hungry baby is not a happy cake smasher. Try to schedule the session when your baby is typically at their most alert and content — usually mid-morning or after a nap and a feed. A full, rested baby is much more likely to engage with the cake (and with you).

4. Let Your Baby Warm Up

The first segment of the session is milestone shots — sitting, standing, and playing with toys on the set. This isn't just filler. It's intentional. It gives your baby time to get comfortable with the space, the lights, and the photographer before the cake appears. Resist the urge to rush to the smash.

5. Don't Stress About How They React to the Cake

Some babies dive face-first into the frosting within seconds. Others poke it gently, look at you for reassurance, and then tentatively lick a finger. Some just stare at it like it's a foreign object. All of these reactions make for incredible photos. There is no wrong way to smash a cake — let your baby do it their way.

6. Wear Clothes You Don't Mind Ruining

If you're helping your baby engage with the cake, you will likely get frosting on you. This is not a day for your favourite blouse. Dress for participation, not observation.

7. Bring the Essentials (and a Few Comfort Items)

Pack your diaper bag with the basics — diapers, wipes, a change of clothes for after the splash segment, and a sippy cup or bottle for mid-session refreshment. If your baby has a comfort item (a favourite toy, a pacifier), bring it. A familiar object can help if they're feeling unsure about the whole situation.

8. Decide on Add-Ons Before the Day

Family photos ($70 + HST) are added at the very beginning of the session, before the smash starts. If you want them, it needs to be decided ahead of time — not when you're already in the studio. Same goes for the smash cake add-on ($50 + HST). Make these decisions when you book so everything is ready to go on the day.

9. Stay Close During the Splash

The splash segment — where your baby gets to play in a white bathtub on set — is a beautiful way to close out the session. But if your baby is pulling up to stand, stay right there. Safety first, cute photos second (and honestly, the two aren't mutually exclusive).

10. Relax and Let Go of the Plan

Babies do not follow scripts. Your baby might love the cake, ignore the cake, or burst into tears the moment they see the cake. They might be an absolute delight for milestone shots and completely over it by the smash. They might surprise you entirely. The best thing you can do is take a breath, trust the process, and let the session unfold naturally. The most genuine, beautiful moments are almost always the unplanned ones.
