What Is a Newborn Session?

(Everything You Need to Know Before Booking)

The days after bringing your baby home are a beautiful blur — exhausting, overwhelming, and full of a kind of love you didn't know was possible. A newborn session exists to slow all of that down and preserve it. Before the newborn haze lifts and your baby starts growing out of their very first looks, a photographer captures it all.

But if you've never booked one before, you might be wondering: what exactly happens at a newborn session? How long does it take? Do I need to do anything special?

Here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Newborn Session?

A newborn session is a photography session scheduled in the first few weeks of your baby's life — ideally between 5 and 21 days old. At this stage, babies are still in that sleepy, curled-up, womb-like state that makes for the most beautiful and peaceful newborn portraits. They're easier to settle, more flexible in their poses, and still have that brand-new softness that disappears so quickly.

Sessions can take place in a professional studio or right in your own home, depending on the style you're looking for.

What Happens During a Newborn Session?

Every session is a little different, but here's what you can generally expect:

It takes time — and that's okay. Newborn sessions aren't rushed. Between feeding breaks, diaper changes, settling a fussy baby, and transitioning between poses or sets, a session can run anywhere from one to three hours. This is completely normal and built into the process.

Your baby leads the pace. There's no rigid schedule. The session wraps around your baby's needs, not the other way around.

You don't have to do much. Your job is to feed your baby, comfort them when needed, and enjoy the experience. The photographer handles the posing and setup.

You can be in the photos. Whether you want parent poses, sibling shots, or family portraits, those can absolutely be included — just let your photographer know when you book.

What Types of Newborn Sessions Are There?

There are two main styles of newborn photography: in-studio and in-home lifestyle. Both are beautiful — they just capture different things.

In-studio sessions are more posed and styled. Your baby is placed in carefully arranged sets using wraps, props, and backdrops to create those classic, timeless newborn portraits. These sessions are all about your baby as the star of the show.

In-home lifestyle sessions are more relaxed and documentary in nature. The focus is on your family in your own space — the real, lived-in moments of those first days: you nursing your baby, your toddler meeting their sibling for the first time, your partner holding the baby in the golden morning light of your bedroom. It's authentic and deeply personal.

When Should You Book?

The short answer: as early as possible — ideally during your second trimester. Newborn sessions fill up quickly, and because the ideal window is so small (5–21 days old), you want your spot secured well before your due date.
